Dementia FAQS
Why does dementia often go undetected?
The early stages of dementia can often present with subtle symptoms such as forgetfulness, confusion, changes in mood, or difficulty concentrating. These signs are sometimes mistaken for normal ageing, stress, or tiredness, which can make dementia difficult to recognise in the early stages. As dementia progresses, symptoms may become more noticeable and begin to affect daily life, communication, memory, and independence. Early diagnosis and support can make a significant difference in helping individuals maintain their quality of life and receive the right care and guidance.
How is dementia diagnosed ?
There is no single test for dementia. A GP will usually begin by discussing symptoms, medical history, and any changes in behaviour, memory, or thinking abilities. They may then refer the individual to a specialist such as a neurologist, geriatrician, or memory clinic for further assessment. The diagnostic process can include: Memory and cognitive assessments Physical health checks Brain scans such as MRI or CT scans Discussions with family members or carers about changes in behaviour and daily living Receiving a diagnosis can feel overwhelming, but it also allows families to access the right support, treatments, and care planning.
Is there a cure for Dementia?
Currently, there is no cure for dementia, and treatments cannot completely stop its progression. However, there are many ways to support individuals living with dementia and help them maintain comfort, routine, and independence for as long as possible. Support may include: Medication to help manage certain symptoms Cognitive stimulation and memory activities Specialist dementia home care Occupational or physical therapy Emotional support and companionship Creating a safe and familiar home environment At Howardian Care Company, our compassionate care team works closely with families, healthcare professionals, and dementia support organisations to provide personalised dementia care at home across North Yorkshire.
